Click button to activate auto unlock feature

Hello Tedee Team,

I would like to share an idea for enhancing the Auto-Unlock functionality. I currently use the basic Tedee lock (no bridge, only Bluetooth) with an iPhone, and I really enjoy the feature that allows the door to open automatically when I return home after being away. However, I believe this feature could be improved with minimal development effort.

Current Limitation:
At the moment, the auto-unlock only activates if I move more than 150–200 meters away from my home. This limitation means that if I take a short walk or step outside briefly, the auto-unlock doesn’t trigger when I return.

Suggested Improvement:
My idea is to eliminate the need to rely solely on the 150m distance and instead allow users to manually indicate when they are leaving the house — without using the phone.

Here’s how it could work:

  1. User presses the Tedee button (on the lock) before closing the door, signaling that they are leaving.
  2. After a configurable delay (e.g., 60 seconds — enough time to move out of Bluetooth range), the Auto-Unlock mode activates.
  3. When the user returns and the phone reconnects via Bluetooth, the door unlocks automatically — without the need to take the phone out of the pocket.

Benefits of This Approach:

  • No need to interact with the phone — just use the Tedee button.
  • Auto-Unlock works even for short trips, without the 150m distance requirement.
  • Simple implementation — uses existing Bluetooth logic with a small tweak.
  • Enhanced user experience — seamless leaving and returning without pulling out the phone.

I believe this improvement would make the Tedee lock even more intuitive and user-friendly, and I imagine many users would appreciate this flexibility.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Feel free to reach out if you need any clarification.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Best regards,

Hi @evertsvs, Thank you for your idea. Unfortunately, it can not be implemented. The phone cannot scan for Bluetooth devices all the time, which is why you need to exit and enter the geo zone. You can use the “auto-unlock” widget to start the auto-unlock manually, and when you approach the door, it will open.

Hi Konrad,

Thank you for the feedback. Is that widget also available for iPhone?

I understand what you are saying, but I don’t see any issue with my idea. The Bluetooth search would start right after the lock button is pressed, and the user is informed about this behavior. They know that enabling this functionality may increase battery consumption, and by pressing the button, they accept this trade-off.

Additionally, the phone could reduce the frequency of Bluetooth scanning, for example, checking for the lock every 10 seconds instead of 5 seconds to optimize battery usage.
